And a Good Time Was Had By All

Great time at Toadstool Bookshop last night! The monthly gathering of Eats, Knits, & Leaves was well attended, and there was lots of lively chatter, sharing knitting advice, and a little book shopping.

We had three new members with us, as well as five regulars. The project of the month seemed to be shawls - five of us had shawls in progress, two were working on sweaters, and Carol was working on a lovely patchwork knitting project similar to a modular knit piece of hers that I showed photos of in November.

At some point in the evening, everyone remembered that they should shop for books before the store closed. This was especially important because Toadstool had offered us a 10% discount on any craft or knitting books we purchased during the meeting. So is it any surprise that we wound up with 5 out of 8 knitters in this scene?

Notice that Vicky (in the striped shirt) is grabbing for a book so quick her hand is a blur! I don't think any of us failed to make a purchase, and for some books, there were negotiations over who would get to buy the one copy on the shelf. I believe some requests were made to order more copies of some titles for next time as well.

Yarn Harlot : The Secret Life of a KnitterAs for myself, I made a point of picking out my book the instant I arrived, even before the table and chairs were set up for our meeting. I had decided I was finally going to buy one of Yarn Harlot's bookbookbooks. I hoped for At Knit's End - that being her first, and me being something of a purist about trying to read books in order - but they didn't have it in stock. What they did have was bookbookbook2, also known as Yarn Harlot: The Secret Life of a Knitter. Only one copy, so I pounced early and locked in my choice.

Fear not, fellow purists - I went to my LYS today and picked up At Knit's End. Order remains in the universe.

My project for the evening was the ruana that I think I mentioned yesterday. No pictures yet - I want to save the ruana for a post of its own, so I have space and time to talk about how I'm knitting it. I will say that it's an interesting project, and I like how it's coming out. It's also a good stash-buster that's fun to knit! If you want a do-it-yourself preview before I get around to posting about it, the pattern I'm using is from the Interweave Press book Folk Shawls. Check under the section with the Mexican shawl patterns.

The next Eats, Knits & Leaves gathering will be on Monday, February 13th, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more details, visit the Toadstool Books website, or call the store at (603) 673-1734.
