Folkcat Experiences Another First; and, a Weekly Crafts Group Review
Yes, I finally did it. I think I talked about it here before, but some friends and I decided to do some yarn-dyeing together at one of our weekly craft gatherings. So we collaborated on an order from KnitPicks.
This is my first ever mail-order yarn purchase. (well, my first was actually from Herrschners over a year ago, but that was just Homespun yarn when I had a broken foot and couldn't get to the local A.C.Moore by myself.) It is, at least, my first from KnitPicks, one of those places that everyone on the knit blogs seems to have already used long before I jumped on the bandwagon.
I know, that seems like a lot of color when the project we were buying for is to dye yarn, doesn't it? Well, two of us couldn't resist buying some already-dyed yarns as well. Most of what you can see above is for someone else's knitting, so I won't share close-ups of that - I'll just say that CGB is going to be knitting some very colorful shawls!
For myself, I couldn't buy nearly as much as I'd like - but I think I did nicely anyhow. I got two colors of the KnitPicks Simple Strips yarn (SweetTarts and Sunset), with which I will add to my planned massive wardrobe of Yoga Socks now that I've proven them a success. (I didn't take my first pair off until I went to bed last night! That's amazing for me - I usually have to yank socks off the instant my feet come out of the shoes. My sensitive toes were so happy not to be all wrapped up in knitting, to be able to move, that I wore the yoga socks all day long. )
I also got two skeins of their Paint Your Own Lace yarn. I have to confess, I looked at these two color-less beauties and almost thought, "Gee, I could dye these up quick enough to use them for my Olympics shawl, couldn't I?" But sensibility took over, and I realized that I would be wiser to use the yarn I've already dyed over 2 months ago, and which has been waiting for me to put it to the needles since its original purchase in August last year!
As always, stay tuned to see what happens with these colorful bits of wool!
The Group Report
I am involved in so many knitterly and crafty gatherings these days, I have decided to try having one day a week that I report about the recent meetings, and remind about the upcoming ones. That should make it easier to find the information if you need it - just watch for my Wednesday post, and see where the knitters are gathering this week.
Beginning with last Thursday, it was an off night for the Knit Around evening at Panera Bread. To begin with, I had come with my laptop computer and was rather depending on using the network to access the Clapotis pattern, as I hadn't saved it locally yet. After several attempts to log on to the net, however, I asked the staff and learned that their WiFi network was down, and they didn't expect it to be back all night.
Rats.
Schedulewise, it seemed to be an off week for knitters, too, as I held the fort alone. Ehh...sometimes it happens. I still managed to comfortably sit and knit all by my lonesome until around 8 p.m., a total of about 3 hours. Had one brief conversation with a couple who also come frequently and who recognized me from the weekly knitting, but otherwise, it was a quiet evening of people watching and Clapotis-knitting. Amazing how many rows you can get done when you're not wasting time on idle chit-chat!
On Sunday, we had the every-other-week SnB-NH - again at Panera. I swear, the Panera staff is going to think we're taking over at this rate! Gryphon came along with me, since we'd been thinking of going together to Panera on the weekends anyhow. Patrice and Jennifer also made it, and abby had been there earlier and left a gift for the SnBers with Panera. I won't say what it was, because there are more of them going to other SnB-NH get-togethers in the next week or so, but it was much appreciated by all of us. Thanks, abby!
Last night was craft circle night here at my home, but with the icy conditions it was called off. Again - sometimes it happens. We'll be back together next week, and this time we're doing our group yarn-dyeing project!
Knitting Groups for Wed., Feb. 1 to Sunday, Feb. 12
I'm going to list the next week and a half of gatherings to better allow you to plan your schedules. As I continue doing this weekly, I'll probably try different formats for my listings until I find something that works well.
You can also view these events (and more) at the SnB-NH calendar at Yahoo! Groups.
Please note: where phone numbers are given for "Info", that is the contact phone for the location, not the knitters organizing the gathering. Since none of these events are officially coordinated by the host sites, if you reach someone at Panera or Borders by phone and ask them about the knitting group, they might not have any clue what you're talking about.
